Let your mercy spill

If it be your will

a dying ember
When all the moments warmly stored within your winter shed
are cast across the landscape of your mind
in a flurried snowfall
every memory a snowflake
a warm crackling cinder turned cold by the wind
you will see your memories melt before you as they touch
their concrete death.

Dead people in my dreams and people I am dead to. Running backwards. A la recherche du temps perdu.
Cheers to friends that have gone away. And apologies to those I've gone away from.
If only life were not an ocean whose relentless tide serves to scatter us across its boundless face and submerge us, solo, within its dark depths.
Life is the struggle of drowning.

Great Moments In 20th Century Literature
"Joy and sadness come by turns, I know now. Beauty and bravery make you sad, Sharon's bravery and my aunt's bravery, and victory breaks your heart... It is not a bad thing to settle for the Little Way, not the big search for the big happiness but the sad little happiness of drinks and kisses, a good little car and a warm deep thigh." - Walker Percy

My favorite one lately:
"If the northeast section of San Francisco is Norman Rockwell's Freedom From Want, then the Tenderloin is Goya's Saturn Devouring His Son."

"But there is no role. That is illusion placed upon me by other people. I have no illusions about who I am. As a writer interested in wordsmith, what I gain spiritually can only help me and my writing or topics of my writing. But I have no role, no role at all. I am on no mission. I am what I am, and I write what I write." - Van Morrison

Great Moments In 19th Century Literature
"There is suffering in the light; in excess it burns. Flame is hostile to the wing. To burn and yet to fly, this is the miracle of genius. When you know and when you love you shall suffer still. The day dawns in tears. The luminous weep, were it only over the dark." - Victor Hugo

In the front yard I placed a sign advertising marriage equality and supporting the vote against a proposed same-sex marriage ban in Minnesota.
That sign was stolen.
What a free country.

You see things. Your eyes work. And then one day they don't. All the sights ever sawn disappear, all the knowns ever knew implode. All the beliefs ever believed, even those embraced by the whole of the heart, torch and incinerate like leaves burned upon a fire.
You start a bonfire in your backyard and watch your children as they light the things that mean less than Men (and Women). Watch them grow as the flames, jumping and dying, burst back and forth in issues of impotent joy and despair. A child's name lingers in your heart for years. But a heart ends, like any street.
Life doesn't amount to anything more than a good laugh. And then the silence.

Van Morrison asked for "dreams that never end."
The true nightmare is a dream that can't come true.
I awake from such a dream and feel my heart being carved into a square, which is a totally useless shape for a heart.
The true nightmare is a dream that can't come true.

"Many men have loved the bells
you fastened to the rein,
and everyone who wanted you
and everyone who wanted you
they found what they will always want again.
Your beauty lost to you yourself
just as it was lost to them.
Oh take this longing from my tongue,
whatever useless things these hands have done.
Let me see your beauty broken down
like you would do for one you love.
Your body like a searchlight
my poverty revealed,
I would like to try your charity
until you cry, 'Now you must try my greed.'
And everything depends upon
how near you sleep to me.
Just take this longing from my tongue
all the lonely things my hands have done.
Let me see your beauty broken down
like you would do for one your love.
Hungry as an archway
through which the troops have passed,
I stand in ruins behind you,
with your winter clothes, your broken sandal straps.
I love to see you naked over there
especially from the back.
Oh take this longing from my tongue,
all the useless things my hands have done,
untie for me your hired blue gown,
like you would do for one that you love.
You're faithful to the better man,
I'm afraid that he left.
So let me judge your love affair
in this very room where I have sentenced mine to death.
I'll even wear these old laurel leaves
that he's shaken from his head.
Just take this longing from my tongue,
all the useless things my hands have done,
let me see your beauty broken down,
like you would do for one you love.
Like you would do for one you love."

I wrote a new love song... This time in English.
If the towering clouds above you
should one day be too heavy,
if the roaring, rushing river
should one day breach the levee,
well you´ll have no need to fear,
darling ease your worried mind.
Cause no matter where you are girl,
I´ll be right behind.
(chorus)
Right behind
right behind
all you have to do is turn around.
Right behind
right behind
Right behind you dear is where I can be found.
If the ocean that we sail on
should try to come between us,
if the forest that we walk through
should become a fiery furnace,
you´ll have no cause for panic,
darling calm your frightened mind.
No matter where you go girl
I´ll be right behind.
(chorus)
I´m not trying to stand in your way
and I don´t want to block your view.
You can roam the whole world over
and my love it will stay true.
I can catch you if you fall,
and you can rest your tired mind.
The only thing I´m asking is
let me stand right behind.
(chorus)

"I loved you for a long long time,
I know this love is real.
It doesn't matter how it all went wrong,
that don't change the way I feel.
And I can't believe that time's
gonna heal this wound I'm speaking of.
There ain't no cure,
there ain't no cure,
there ain't no cure for love.
I'm aching for you baby,
I can't pretend I'm not.
I need to see you naked
in your body and your thought.
I've got you like a habit
and I'll never get enough.
There ain't no cure,
I don't need to be forgiven
for loving you so much.
It's written in the scriptures,
it's written there in blood.
I even heard the angels
declare it from above.
There ain't no cure,
I know this love is real.
It doesn't matter how it all went wrong,
that don't change the way I feel.
And I can't believe that time's
gonna heal this wound I'm speaking of.
There ain't no cure,
there ain't no cure,
there ain't no cure for love.
I'm aching for you baby,

I need to see you naked
in your body and your thought.
I've got you like a habit
and I'll never get enough.
There ain't no cure,
there ain't no cure,
there ain't no cure for love.
I see you in the subway
and I see you on the bus.
I see you lying down with me,
I see you waking up.
I see your hand, I see your hair,
your bracelets and your brush.
And I call to you, I call to you,
but I don't call soft enough.
There ain't no cure,
there ain't no cure,
there ain't no cure for love.
I walked into this empty church,
I had no place else to go,
when the sweetest voice I ever heard
whispered to my soul:I don't need to be forgiven
for loving you so much.
It's written in the scriptures,
it's written there in blood.
I even heard the angels
declare it from above.
There ain't no cure,
there ain't no cure,
there ain't no cure for love."

and then there was Lincoln...
There was me sitting underneath bright fluorescent lights. My mother asked me: "Stephen, are you going to bed?"
I replied, "No."
And she said, "Okay. Well good night."
I replied, "No."
And she said, "Okay. Well good night."

san diego (and a series of failures)
Today I made my peace with the city of San Diego and said my goodbyes. I kayaked along the coastline and met with creatures that exist in a different world. Fish, sea lions and dolphins. Kelp of extraordinary length. There is mystery and majesty both frightful and awe-inspiring still alive in the water.
But I returned to land.
I will take three things away from this place.
1. sailing
2. on land, sitting in the grass, I saw two young men sitting about ten feet apart from each other with their legs open wide. They were lobbing a tennis ball back and forth in the air attempting to hit one another in the testicles and laughing about it.
3. A group of three girls, approximately 15 years of age, were standing behind a car in the parking lot. Two of the girls were holding up a towel as their friend changed between the towel and the car's trunk. Her clothing was momentarily removed and the towel slipped. A part of her body was exposed. At the same time a sports car with tinted windows was driving by. The car stopped, the window rolled down. A man no younger than 25 made a sly sexual comment to the young girls, then rolled his window up as the car departed. The girls were disgusted and laughed, "Gross! He just said something so gross. Does he even know how old we are?"
San Diego, like much of this world, is like a beautiful hollow crystal. So wonderful to touch and hold but there is nothing on the inside.
That's all that I'm taking away from this place.

"Now I'm out of prison, I got me a friend at last,
he don't steal or cheat or drink or lie.
His name's codeine, he's the nicest thing I've seen.
Together we're gonna wait around and die."
I feel like sailing into oblivion across an ocean of pills.
I feel a true hatred for everyone, and upon its arrival I realized that I should not be allowed among the living.
